Lymphedema, Lipedema, and Fluid Retention

Living with lymphedema or lipedema is not just a cosmetic issue.

It means living with swelling, heaviness, pain, tension and, often, misunderstanding. In many cases, for years.

Here, we don't work on the promise of "eliminating the problem", but rather on a much more realistic and achievable goal: improving your quality of life, your functionality and your relationship with your body.

I see patients in San Pedro del Pinatar (Lo Pagán), Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja.

Understanding what is happening to you is the first step

Although they are often confused, lymphedema and lipedema are not the same thing.

Both require a specific and respectful approach.

Lymphedema: accumulation of lymphatic fluid that causes swelling, usually in the arms or legs.

Lipedema: an alteration of fatty tissue, usually painful, that mainly affects the legs (and sometimes the arms), and does not improve with diet or conventional exercise alone.

In both cases, it is not a lack of care or willpower.

Who is this approach for?

• People diagnosed with lymphedema or lipedema.

• People with persistent swelling, heaviness, or pain in the abdomen, legs, and/or arms.

• To aid in the drainage of fluids after surgery or pregnancy (from the third month onwards).

• People seeking a professional, realistic, and humane approach.

The role of nutrition: essential support

In lymphedema and lipedema, diet can make a big difference when approached appropriately and without extremes.

A well-planned nutritional approach can help you:

• Reduce low-grade inflammation.

• Improve energy and fatigue.

• Facilitate weight loss when necessary.

• Improve your relationship with food, which is key in lipedema.

Here, nutrition is not seen as a punishment, but as another tool to help you feel better in your body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy cure lymphedema or lipedema?

It is not a question of curing, but rather of improving symptoms, functionality and quality of life through an appropriate and consistent approach.

Is fluid retention just a cosmetic problem?

No. It can cause heaviness, pain, limited movement and general discomfort, and deserves professional attention.

Is pressotherapy alone sufficient?

In some cases it helps, but it usually works best as a complement to a more comprehensive treatment.

Does nutrition influence these processes?

Yes. Diet can help reduce inflammation, improve energy levels and support physical treatment.

Do I need to come indefinitely?

No. Follow-up is tailored to each person and their progress, without proposing closed or endless treatments.
